Character Notes:
History: [Given that Hiiragi is a five year old and Hanamaru Kindergarten is an incomplete manga there is very little history to go on. If you need more I can provide episode and manga synopsis's for her.]

✗ Since Hiiragi is roughly around 5 years old she doesn't have much of a history, not only that there is a great deal about Hiiragi that is currently unknown. What we do know is that she lives with her papa, a nameless man whom she helps with his astrophysics, and her mother is absent. Whether the mother just has yet to be introduced, much like Koume's parents, or she is deceased, or she just left them is up for speculation. Odds are it is just her and her papa who calls her Hii-chan. It is known that she has been helping her father with his work for some time and that they both like to go star gazing together.

✗ To date, the most profound thing to happen to Hiiragi in canon is her joining the Sakura Class at the Hanamaru Kindergarten and becoming friends with Anzu and Koume. Anzu is a highly eccentric and energetic little girl in the same class who is infatuated with their teacher, Tsuchida “Tsucchi” Naozomi. Koume is a shy little girl, also in the same class, who is rather normal next to Hiiragi and Anzu. She actually resembles a five year old both in personality and in her knowledge of things. So basically Hiiragi spends most of her time trying to help Anzu win the affections of their teacher. Otherwise she and her friends get up to the usual make-believe mischief or they are helping other people or students with their problems. She obtained a student in second-year from the sunflower class, named Kenji. After he lost in a match of wits against her he decided to call Hiiragi “master” which she is uncomfortable with.

✗ Other than that there’s not much historical depth to go on; Hanamaru Kindergarten is a very straightforward slice-of-life kind of deal that explores the every day shenanigans of kindergartners. There are no unexpected twists or life changing events. Entrance ceremonies, trips down the big slide, summer vacation, footraces, swimming pools, and Christmas’…that’s about as deep as it gets. It occasionally explores love and family ties, but nothing that turns the plot on its head unexpectedly or adds any further depth to the briefest of histories ever…the history of a kindergartner. Of course there are what-if scenarios with the girls all grown up or with the girls in fantasy land, but has very little relevance.

Personality:
✗ The chief aspect of Hiiragi's personality is her intelligence which is far superior to that of your typical kindergartner and most adults for that matter. The fact that she knows at least a little bit about everything has led those around her to dub her the “living encyclopedia,” and what she does not know she is more than happy to read about in books. She is so intelligent that she is able to help her father with his work in astrophysics, and when it comes to using a computer she is very competent. While Hiiragi is rather gifted academically, to the point where she is aware of the workings of the “adult” world, putting some of her knowledge to practice doesn't always have the desired effect. She doesn't seem to understand that certain concepts do not work in every situation, most of this can be seen when she’s trying to help Anzu win Tsuchida over. For example at the kindergarten pool while the girls are trying to help Anzu win the affections of Tsuchida, Hiiragi noticed that Tsuchida would always come and pay attention to her when Anzu was in trouble. So they put Anzu into a dangerous situation in the pool—Hiiragi dressed up as a shark and circled her while Koume went to get Tsuchida. While in theory it worked, Tsuchida came to Anzu's rescue, he was upset at her instead of attracted. Hiiragi has also pointed out that in order to win Tsuchida's affections she would need a figure, so the girls try unsuccessfully to give Anzu breasts. What doesn't occur to Hiiragi is that Anzu is too young, period, age doesn't usually factor in to her calculations. So sometimes Hiiragi's ideas don't have the desired results and sometimes they are not applicable to every situation. Though a lot of the times her knowledge can be useful such as when Kenji, a second year, teases Koume, telling her that her new pet rabbit would die from loneliness while Koume was at school causing Koume to fret to the point of tears. Hiiragi challenged this logic inevitably proving Kenji wrong to Koume's relief.

✗ In spite of her intelligence Hiiragi does maintain a childlike innocence. She believes in Santa and that the cartoon, Panda Neko, is real though she is very likely to challenge facts, especially things that are urban myth or old wives tales. Why she believes Santa and Pandacat are real is unknown, perhaps these are just beliefs that are so far spread among children her age that she hasn't thought about it. Perhaps her father has some control over her reading material and encourages some of her innocent beliefs.

✗ In most situations Hiiragi comes off as very calm and there's very little deviation in her expression as far as emotions go. She's not stoic by any means; she's just the cool head and the voice of reason in certain situations. Like upon first meeting Anzu at the entrance ceremony, Anzu was talkative and Hiiragi said it was polite not to take while the teachers were speaking. She's actually a very passionate person, especially when she has a goal in mind. She enjoys TV dramas and when one of her favorite actors, Fukuda, said that he was going to quit she arranged a kindergarten play in order to inspire him again. So she can be passionate, excited, depressed, happy, thoughtful, and all of these things, it is just that even while expressing these feelings she is calm and collected. She is also easily embarrassed, especially when she receives too much praise and flattery. Hiiragi is never one to beat around the bush either, she has no problem expressing her thoughts and expressing them well.

✗ Hiiragi is a hard core cosplayer, in nearly every episode and in many chapters of the manga she can be seen in dress-up which is probably the one thing that defines her as a child and a kindergartner. While she's intelligent and very mature for her age this is the one aspect of her life where she is more child-like. When she does dress up she pretends to be the characters, much like a child would pretend to be a princess. Hiiragi does tend to play out her characters rather accurately and enthusiastically, for example when she dressed up as a detective and the girls follow Tsuchida because they believe he's seeing another woman. Or in another instance when she dressed up as a Samurai in the Kindergarten play to help stop Fukuda from giving up on his acting career. She also dresses as a Kappa or a fish when she goes swimming not only to protect herself from the sun, but it gives her a chance to play as a fish or a Kappa. So she'll dress up with intent, but sometimes she'll do it just for herself. She's been known to read books while dressed as Panda Neko and when she's complimented she'll dance or strike a pose. So cosplay is a major part of who she is as she incorporates it into her daily life.

Other: Hanamaru Kindergarten makes references to other anime such as Full Metal Alchemist, Evangelion, and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann so Hiiragi will need a permissions post for the whole fourth-wall breaking thing. Hiiragi is gifted as an athlete, but her abilities are proportionate to her age. She’s handy with a sword. She wants to be a space explorer among other things. She likes sushi and mitarashi dango. Her favorite pastime is reading.

First Person (entry type):

As a class project Tsuchida said we had to keep a daily record of events and observations. Koume-chan and Anzu-chan are already making a picture book, but I want to do something different and online journals and diaries seem very popular these days.

Diary comes from the Latin word diarium meaning daily allowance. It is also said that Claudio Phinhanez was thought to be the first to create a web page in an online diary composition called “Open Diary.”

I am trying to decide whether or not this diary should be open or if I should keep it to myself. I think it would be interesting to get different opinions on certain issues like the energy sources and ionization mechanisms in LINERs and this season of Panda Neko!

With an online diary I can mix mediums…pictures, videos, drawings, and I can write too. I can always change my mind if I don’t want it to be public…

…So, I wonder what I should talk about first?

Oh, Anzu-chan’s mama is going to take us to the Halloween parade in Kawasaki on the 28th this month. It’s exciting, I want to see all of the wonderful costumes…and entry forms are still being accepted…

…maybe I could too…

Third Person: A dream.

If anyone were to ask Hiiragi what her fondest dream was she would have to say becoming a space explorer—to take the one aspect of her life that she shared with her papa and expand into places unknown. In her mind she could see herself on a desert planet like Tatooine fighting aliens with a sword of light, or soaring through the stars with Panda Neko at her side. Of course she knew that this was all in her imagination, but the amazing thing about the final frontier was the fact that anything could be out there and anything can happen!

Unfortunately it would be a long time before Hiiragi could realize her dream and that gave her plenty of time to visualize its magnificence. In the meantime, however, there were plenty of mysteries to be solved right her on her own small but beautiful little world. Presently was the riddle that was the romance of Anzu-chan and Tsuchida, theirs was a complex problem that even Hiiragi herself struggled with.

You would think that someone as perfectly charming and pleasant as Anzu-chan would have no problem trying to win the affections of anyone. According to Modar Universities Guide to Romance writing love notes, listening, talking, playing, and complimenting would have Tsuchida falling all over himself for Anzu-chan. Cards, candy, and flowers had no effect either and they had tried many of these methods so far. Well they would just have to find out what sort of things “turned” Tsuchida “on” as they say.

Until they could manage that then Hiiragi still had plenty of puzzles to solve right here.
